"Finally, my brethren, be strong in
the Lord, and in the power of His might.
Put on the whole armor of God, that
ye may be able to stand against the
wiles of the devil.
For we wrestle not against flesh and
blood, but against principalities,
against powers, against the rulers
of the darkness of this world, against
spiritual wickedness in high places.
Wherefore take unto you the whole
armor of God, that ye may be able to
withstand in the evil day, and
having done all, to stand.
Stand therefore, having your loins
girt about with truth, and having on
the breastplate of righteousness;
And your feet shod with the
preparation of the gospel of peace;
Above all, taking the shield of faith,
wherewith ye shall be able to quench
all the fiery darts of the wicked.
And take the helmet of salvation,
and the sword of the Spirit,
which is the word of God:
Praying always with all prayer and
supplication in the Spirit, and
watching thereunto with all perse-
verance and supplication for all saints."
Did you catch that my friend? "...the
sword of the Spirit, which is the
word of God."
Not a weapon in the conventional sense, but
spiritual; given by God to His children so they
may repel the darts of the unseen enemy. God
knows the temptations of the flesh. He also
knows that our greatest trials and suffering
will be in the realm of the spiritual.
His gifts to us, to enable us to successfully
engage the "principalities, powers and rulers
of the darkness of this world" are: Truth,
Righteousness, Peace, Faith, Salvation,
the Word and Prayer.
"For the word of God is quick, and
powerful, and sharper than any twoedged
sword, piercing even to the dividing
asunder of soul and spirit, and of the
joints and marrow, and is a discerner
of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
Neither is there any creature that is not
manifest in His sight: but all things
are naked and opened unto the eyes of
Him with whom we have to do."
And again, the "word of God is quick,
and powerful, and sharper than any two-
edged sword, . . and is a discerner
of the thoughts and intents of the heart."
Not a book made of paper and printer's ink.
Let's read what John had to say about the Word
in John 1:1 and 1:14: "In the beginning was
the Word, and the Word was with God, and the
Word was God. And the Word was made
flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld His
glory, the glory as of the only begotten of
the Father,) full of grace and truth."
The 'sword' is the Word of God; and the
Word of God is our Lord Jesus Christ.
Now let's go back to verses 2 and 3:
"The same was in the beginning with God.
All things were made by Him; and without
Him was not any thing made that was made."
Can there ever be a more powerful weapon
than our Lord Jesus Christ Himself?
And in verse 16 of the 4th chapter of Hebrews:
"Let us therefore come boldly unto the
throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy,
and find grace to help in time of need."
We must be ever watchful.
I close with this passage, 1 Peter 5:6-11:
"Humble yourselves therefore under the
mighty hand of God, that He may exalt
you in due time: Casting all your care
upon Him; for He careth for you. Be sober,
be vigilant; because your adversary the
devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about,
seeking whom he may devour: Whom resist
stedfast in the faith, knowing that the
same afflictions are accomplished in
your brethren that are in the world. But
the God of all grace, who hath called us
unto His eternal glory by Christ Jesus,
after that ye have suffered a while, make
you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle
you. To Him be glory and dominion for
ever and ever. Amen."
